Strawberries are the most popular berry of American consumers. There are two types: June-bearing and Ever-bearing. The June bearing are typically large and only bear for several weeks. Ever-bearing strawberries bear all season long but have smaller but sweeter berries.
Most of the commercially grown strawberries in the U.S. are grown in California and Florida. For the Virginia consumer, this means considerable transport time from picking to eating. This is the advantage of locally grown berries.
Strawberries are high in Vitamin C (8 berries provide 160% of the RDA allowance). They are high in antioxidants and flavinoids which have been shown in studies to be beneficial in suppressing various types of cancer cells.
When picking strawberries, look for bright red berries with no green areas near the stem and without dark spots.
