Blackberries are native to Virginia and provide a very sweet berry if picked at the peak of ripeness. If picked early, they have a tart flavor but are still ideal for pies, jams, and preserves. They are high in fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals but low in calories making them an ideal food. In addition, they have anthocyanins, a phytochemical antioxidant that destroys free radicals that can damage cells and lead to cancer and heart disease.
